English Foxhounds were bred to work together in packs to hunt foxes by scent, followed by huntsmen on horseback. The English Foxhound has been carefully bred for over one hundred and fifty years. The stud books published by the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America date back to 1890. Most English Foxhounds today live in packs and are still used for their traditional role of fox hunting. Because there are few English Foxhounds in homes as pets, they are one of the rarest breeds in the AKC registry.
