The Shar-Pei originally worked as an all-purpose farm dog. Described as muscular, agile, aloof, and loyal, the medium-sized Shar-Pei helped gard the farmer’s home and livestock. One of the breed’s distinguishing features is the unique coat texture, reflected in the name Shar-Pei, meaning "rough, sandy coat” or, loosely translated, "sandpaper coat.”
